Accessible Chair Yoga for People with Different Abilities

At Chair Yoga Ireland we believe everyone deserves access to the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of yoga—regardless of ability, mobility, or condition. Our accessible yoga classes are designed for people with different abilities, making this practice inclusive and welcoming.

Whether you use a wheelchair, have limited mobility, are recovering from injury, or need adaptations to practise comfortably, our classes meet you where you are. Chair yoga works gently within your abilities and stays below your pain threshold. Many participants with chronic pain find that mindful movement helps manage their pain. Research shows that adaptive yoga can improve quality of life and reduce symptoms for various conditions.

From online sessions at home to in-person instruction at care facilities across Ireland, we bring adaptive yoga to people with different abilities nationwide.

What Is Accessible Chair Yoga?

Accessible yoga is an adapted form of yoga that removes physical barriers, making the practice available to people with different abilities. Our chair-based approach means you can experience all the benefits of yoga—improved flexibility, reduced stress, better body awareness, enhanced wellbeing—without needing to get on a floor mat or perform traditional poses.

Every movement in our accessible yoga classes is carefully modified and adapted. We practise seated in sturdy chairs or wheelchairs, using props and modifications that honour each person’s unique body and abilities. Whether you have a physical disability, chronic condition, limited mobility, or simply prefer the support of a chair, adaptive yoga provides a safe, comfortable path to wellness.

What Participants Are Saying

I wish to let you know how important the weekly Chair Yoga classes are to my 82-year-old mother and to myself also as her carer. Having been diagnosed with Dementia there is not a lot my mother does on her own accord. Hazel is a great host and provides a friendly and happy setting for those attending. It’s the one hour in the week that my mother has something planned for her and we would love to see it continue.

Miriam

I am a 73-year-old woman caring for my husband full time who has M.S. and C.O.P.D. I also have C.O.P.D. I found these classes beneficial for both my physical and mental health. I do feel stronger from doing the classes. This class has given my Wednesday a bit of structure. It has allowed me time where I don't think of anything else but be in the moment. It has allowed me to see and talk to other people like myself.
